A Perfect Day in Beaufort, NC
Whenever I travel to the North Carolina coast, I always look for a chance to visit Beaufort, NC - a quaint, charming coastal town that feels like stepping back in time. Tucked along North Carolina’s Crystal Coast, Beaufort sits where Taylor’s Creek meets the Atlantic Ocean, just across from the barrier islands of Cape Lookout National Seashore. It’s about a 40-minute drive from Emerald Isle and an hour and a half from Wilmington, making it the perfect getaway for anyone craving coastal beauty and small-town charm.

This historic gem holds a special place in North Carolina’s past, as the fourth-oldest town in the state, dating back to 1709, even before the colonial capital of New Bern was founded! It’s no surprise that Southern Living named it one of the best small towns in the South.
One of my favorite ways to start a day in Beaufort is with a morning run down Front Street, where the boardwalk stretches along the waterfront, offering stunning views of the boats in the harbor and the calm, glistening water. The salt air and ocean breeze create the perfect coastal escape. And if I’m lucky, I might catch a glimpse of the wild horses grazing across the water on the Rachel Carson Reserve, a truly magical sight that never gets old.
Beaufort is the kind of town where you can slow down and soak in the coastal charm. Whether you’re visiting for the day or staying for a long weekend, there’s so much to explore:
- Take a ferry ride to Shackleford Banks to see the wild horses up close or visit the Cape Lookout Lighthouse for breathtaking ocean views.
- Stroll through downtown and explore locally owned boutiques, art galleries, and charming gift shops, perfect for finding one-of-a-kind coastal treasures.
- Walk through the historic district, where tree-lined streets are home to centuries-old homes with stories to tell. Each house has its own charm, from grand porches to picket fences draped in coastal blooms.
- Start the morning with a coffee at Cru, a cozy local favorite known for its great brews and laid-back, welcoming atmosphere. It’s my go-to spot for a post-run pick-me-up, but whether you’ve been jogging along the waterfront or just strolling through town, it’s the perfect way to start the day.
- Dine with a waterfront view at local favorites like Aqua Restaurant for small plates and seafood, or Front Street Grill at Stillwater for a perfect sunset dinner.
- Explore the town’s history with a visit to the Beaufort Historic Site, where you can tour historic homes, or step into the world of pirates at the North Carolina Maritime Museum, which houses artifacts from Blackbeard’s famous ship, the Queen Anne’s Revenge.
- For the more adventurous, rent a kayak or paddleboard and take in Beaufort from the water, paddling along Taylor’s Creek for an up-close view of the wild horses.
Beyond its beauty and rich history, Beaufort has a deep appreciation for artistry. From handcrafted jewelry to woven baskets and locally made pottery, it is home to a thriving artisan community. It was here, at The Olde Beaufort Farmers Market, that I first met artisan Laura Welborn and fell in love with her handcrafted baskets. Her work captures the essence of coastal living with natural textures, timeless craftsmanship, and a deep connection to the region. Each piece reflects the beauty and simplicity of life by the water. You can explore her stunning collection here: Laura Welborn Baskets.
Whether you come for the history, the waterfront views, or the incredible local artisans, Beaufort is one of those small towns that stays with you long after you leave. If you haven’t been yet, it’s time to add it to your list!
